Corporations encouraged to “adopt” precinct to help needy

In a new programme by the South West CDC, corporate donors can help to serve the needs of vulnerable groups residing in one- or two-room purchased flats in various precincts.

So far, Hong Kah North, Chua Chu Kang and Taman Jurong have been “adopted” by corporations.

On Sunday, Jason Marine Group pledged to “adopt” Telok Blangah, conducting enrichment field trips for children and taking seniors out for excursions.

In total, over 110 households have participated in the programme.

South West CDC hopes that these regular activities can provide recreation for the elderly, and prevent them from falling into isolation, as well as foster neighbourliness by encouraging the more able in the precinct to look out for the less able amongst them.

“Adopt-a-precinct” is an extension of “Adopt-a-rental-block” – another project by South West CDC.

More than 250 activities have been organised to benefit over 2,500 needy families and vulnerable elderly in all 24 rental blocks within the South West district.

Corporate partners include Shell, Singapore University of Technology & Design and Hewlett-Packard Singapore, with home improvement works like spring cleaning and painting of homes, social outings, enrichment field trips and grocery distributions for needy residents.
