Singapore Press Holdings’ (SPH) Red Apple Day, a biannual blood donation drive, collected 165 units of blood from 277 donors at the SPH News Centre auditorium today.
Held in conjunction with the Singapore Red Cross Society, the first hour (11am to 12 noon) was reserved exclusively for SPH staff. It was then opened to the public to donate their blood from 12 noon onwards.
Since 2011, SPH has made this annual event a biannual one in response to a dip in blood donations during festive periods. The previous SPH Red Apple Day was held on 18 January 2012 and collected a total of 134 units from about 200 donors.
Mr Alan Chan, Chief Executive Officer of SPH and a regular blood donor himself, expressed his appreciation to all donors, volunteers and sponsors.
He said: “Our decision to have a biannual event since 2011 has helped to increase the units of blood donated to the Bloodbank during the festive season. SPH and Singapore Red Cross will continue to work together to save more lives.
“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the donors, volunteers and sponsors for their unwavering support for the SPH Red Apple Day.”
The SPH Red Apple Day is supported by SPH MediaBoxOffice, AsiaOne, SPH UnionWorks´ 91.3 FM and Radio 100.3, Benelux, Centrum, Cerebos, Gardenia, Marigold and Nestle. Teachers and students of Beatty Secondary School also volunteered at the blood donation drive today.
