Old army uniforms in Singapore have been given a new lease of life, thanks to a local social enterprise.
The local social enterprise, which is an initiative under the South West Community Development Council (CDC), launched CAMOU Products – a range of items made from decommissioned army uniforms.
All sewn by women, the items include tote bags, laptop bags, and even mobile phone covers.
Many of the women involved in the project are stay-at-home mums, who earn about S$150 a month from the project to supplement their household income.
“Because I’m a stay-at-home mum, I want (to earn) some extra income. I’m doing some stitching… handicrafts,” said Salamat Osa Ahamed Jamuludeen, a stay-at-home mum.
Lending their support are Singapore’s favourite army boys – the cast of Ah Boys to Men.
“We can help low-income families… (and) come up with this merchandise… which many youngsters will be interested to buy. So I thought this was a win-win situation,” said Jack Neo, director of Ah Boys to Men.
