5,000 go barefoot to raise funds for needy

Some 5,000 people took off their shoes and hit the road at Gardens by the Bay for a good cause on Saturday morning (July 12).

Their efforts for the “Bare Your Sole” event raised close to S$300,000 in support of the needy in Singapore.

The funds will help improve living conditions for the elderly, the sick and the physically challenged who live in one-room flats — which would involve clean-ups, repair and paint works, as well as replacing bedbug-infested furniture.

The programme, called Project Homeworks, is run by Habitat for Humanity Singapore.

Besides attracting Singaporeans from all walks of life, this year’s event saw 50 migrant workers from a local construction company take part for the first time.

Eng Kim Chooi, general manager of Kim Seng Heng Engineering Construction, said: “We always take part in these kinds of events, and we also encourage all our employees to participate to show full support. The message we want to bring across is we want to make a difference to the people and to our society.”
